BOTH, Christoph

Christoph Both (PhD UVic) is Full Professor and Chair of Music Technology as well as Chair of Strings at the School of Music, Acadia University. His interests are broad and encompass contemporary music performance, new technologies, and improvisation. At present, he is engaged in the Ethno-musicological research project, "Mission Music Africa," an interactive website with over 1000 unpublished East African Songs as well as Film and imagery. Also of note, his international music performance career, including tours to Europe, Russia and China, has been supported by major Canada Council as well as MIANS Travel and Recording Grants. He is also signed up to record labels Haenssler Music (Germany) and Warner Music (UK) among other Canadian labels. Additionally, Dr. Both is an innovator having patented the music software MusicPath (in process of commercialization and valued at $2.9 million) which connects musical instruments through the internet in real-time. He also founded the BA Concentration in Music Technology program for which he received the Acadia University President's Award for Innovation. Other awards include the collaborative multi-year SSHRC/Industry Canada research grant (Dr. Marontate/Both -$250,000) evaluating the impact of new technologies for the creation and dissemination of music and other forms of audio images: "New Technologies/Creative Practices in Music, Audio and Multimedia: From Theory to the Marketplace"; as well as his doctoral studies in pursuit of information theory and electronic music composition which were supported by an international DAAD doctoral scholarship.
