JOHN, David G.

David John (PhD Toronto) is Professor of German at the University of Waterloo and is former Director (2004-2009) and now Founding Director of Waterloo Centre for German Studies. His research interests relate to enlightenment and classical periods of German literature and culture, with a focus on Goethe, Faust, theatre, and intercultural performance. In 2009, Dr. John completed a book on the East German director Fritz Bennewitz (1926-95) and his seven Faust productions. Recently publications include “Goethe’s Faust in India: The Kathakali Adaptation,” in Lorna Fitzsimmons’ International Faust Studies: Adaptation, Reception, Translation; and “Stage Productions of Goethe’s Faust in India,” in Jochen Golz et al. Orient und Okzident. Zur Faustrezeption in nicht-christlichen Kulturen. He is currently working with Prof. Joerg Esleben (U Ottawa) on Bennewitz's theatre activity in India.
