Cultural Diversity

Migration and cultural diversity are key challenges that contemporary German society has to face. While it is widely recognized that Germany needs the continuous influx of migrants to address its looming demographic crisis, there is considerable resistance against a modern, Canada-style immigration regime. In addition, the integration of newcomers into German society shows distinct problems, – manifest most prominently in the underachievement of migrants in the educational sector and labour market. This cluster addresses the repercussions of Germany turning into a ‘country of immigration’, the political struggles over the issue and the transformation of German society due to its growing ethno-cultural diversity (also from a transatlantic perspective).
