The first issue of Seminar appeared in the spring of 1965, sponsored jointly by the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German (CAUTG) and the German Section of the Australasian Universities Language and Literature Association (AULLA). The journal appeared twice yearly from 1965 to 1969, three times yearly from 1970 to 1973, and quarterly since 1974.

The objectives of Seminar are:

  • to propagate the scholarly and critical knowledge und understanding of Germanic Studies, meaning the study primarily of literature and culture of the German-speaking countries, and secondarily of literature and culture in other Germanic languages excluding English;
  • to promote international recognition of Canadian Scholarship in this field by providing a distinctive Canadian outlet for Canadian scholars;
  • to stimulate and renew the scholarly and critical discussion of Germanic Studies in Canada by including international scholarship in the field in a Canadian journal;
  • to foster international cooperation in the study of Germanic literatures and cultures in the English-speaking world through our special relationship with Australasian colleagues.
